What Is This Song List About?

"...it's just a list of prime examples. Prime examples of the various bassists, or genre, or songs that can be identified by just hearing their bassline. Songs that wouldn't exist without the bassline in some examples. Whatever way you wish to use it, it's simply a list of songs and artists that people named, and was not judged, edited (save for accurate credits and spelling) nor voted upon."

"...it's no big deal. Just a simple list of a few hundred songs some bass players said they liked, hosted in this quiet, dimly lit back water of the Internet. "

Need More Details?

Once upon a time, a poster (OldJazzBass) in a newsgroup (Alt.Guitar.Bass) started a thread ( Classic Bass Lines ) asking the group to post songs they felt had classic/strong bass parts. Specifically, OldJazzBass asked for 'Bass parts that define/carry the song, or make up the groove without question...'

Eventually, the list of responses grew quite long and some silly person (MB) compiled them into a text file with more than 250 entries. And still the songs kept coming as more and more songs were remembered.

Next someone wanted the list sorted by artist instead of by performance title. Additional enhancements were also suggested. Finally, MB converted the list into a database format and wrote this site to ease distribution and maintenance.

The purpose of this site is to maintain and host this growing list. You can use the 'Suggest A Song' link above to add your own suggestions to this list. Suggestions you make are first reviewed by for consistent punctuation and artist name, then added to this list.

As I am a novice bass player, I try to avoid being judge, jury and executioner with respect to this list. This list is simply collected OPINIONS and the bottom line is that nearly all suggestions end up getting added.
